New Sites on Old Operating SystemsThis is actually a guide on running the modern web on older systems. This is NOT about my favourite things. Windows 98/MEFor Windows 98 and ME, get KernelEx. It adds some Windows NT compatibility to 9x versions of Windows. FirefoxThen, get Firefox installed. WinFan3672 recommends you get Firefox 9.0.1 running, since you install KernelEx and install Firefox.. Get Firefox 9.0.1 here. There are some instructions on the KernelEx wiki you can look at if you are interested in newer versions of Firefox. A plaintext version is available here, in case your browser is slow and/or old. Internet ExplorerYou can try to install IE 8.0, the newest version of IE that supports Windows XP, onto your Windows 98/ME VM. It is unlikely to work, but you can try. If the link above is dead and/or does not let you download IE 8, get it as part of Utilu's IE collection instead. You could also install IE 6.0 SP1, if all else fails, by directly downloading the installer from here. MyPalUsing KernelEx, it might be possible to get MyPal working, since KX is a Windows XP kernel extension, and MyPal is a Windows XP browser. Windows XPFor Windows XP, WinFan3672 recommends using MyPal, a modern web browser for Windows XP. It is free and open source, so you should try it. Windows 7Use Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome. Firefox is continuing to support Firefox as of right now. Do know 7's life is limited in terms of browser support. Windows VistaClick below to download a version of Chrome designed for Vista. Security ConcernsDo not use it to browse the web and do things like banking. Use this for *fun* and nothing else. Older Than ThisYou can browse the old web using the old net. It is compatible with every browser, even IE 1. Probably. |
